Musical Road - Take It Easy

There’s something poetic about hearing music where you least expect it — not from a speaker or a stage, but from the road itself. In September 2025, Winslow added a brand-new reason to slow down and listen: a musical stretch of Route 66 along East Third Street, near the 9/11 Remembrance Park, where the asphalt hums the opening notes of “Take It Easy” — the song that made this little Arizona town legendary.

Drivers approaching from the Transcon Lane turnoff off I-40 and turning onto Old Route 66 eastbound into town will find what seems like an ordinary piece of pavement. But as your tires glide along the special grooves, the familiar melody begins to rise — soft, imperfect, yet instantly recognizable. For a few seconds, the Mother Road sings back to you, and Winslow’s musical soul vibrates through the steering wheel.

I haven’t been back to Winslow since this new road was installed, so I haven’t heard it with my own ears yet. But I can almost imagine it — because I remember the feeling of another tune carved into the highway, on the musical road of Tijeras, New Mexico, where the fading bars of “America the Beautiful” whispered beneath the tires as we crossed the desert. The sound was faint, almost secret — and yet it lingered. I’m sure the one in Winslow carries that same invisible charm, only this time filled with the carefree spirit of rock ’n’ roll.

This project is more than just a roadside novelty. It’s part of a wider creative effort to celebrate Route 66’s musical heritage — connecting past and present in anticipation of the Route 66 Musical Roads Centennial 2026. Together with other installations along the route, this new singing stretch of highway keeps alive the idea that the Mother Road is not only a line on the map — but a living rhythm, a melody of memory.

Traveler’s Note

The melody plays only at the right speed and direction — steady your car at 35 mph and listen closely. Roll down the windows, turn off the radio, and let the road itself perform. The sound isn’t loud; it’s a vibration that travels through the tires more than the air. It lasts only a few seconds, but like everything on Route 66, those seconds are filled with stories.

When I finally return to Winslow, this will be the very first thing I’ll want to experience — not just to hear a song, but to feel the way the town itself still hums with its own melody, fifty years after “Take It Easy” first put it on the map.
