The Shop On Route 66

There are places along Route 66 that you simply pass through. And then, there are places that invite you to stop, smile, and stay a while—The Shop on Route 66 in Gardner, Illinois, is one of those magical little stops that leave a big mark on your heart.

👉 It’s located just steps away from the quirky  Two-Cell Jail and what remains of the legendary Riviera Restaurant—making it the perfect place to pause, explore, and take it all in.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, trust me: this shop is absolutely worth a visit. It’s not just a store—it’s an experience. A colorful, cheerful, lovingly curated space where the spirit of the Mother Road is alive in every corner. From the moment you walk in (or even before, just walking around the outside!), you can feel that this isn’t just a place to sell souvenirs. It’s a place built with passion, with purpose, with a deep love for Route 66 and for every traveler who passes through.

The shop is run by Tom, one of the kindest and most welcoming people we met on the entire Route. If you’re lucky enough to meet him, don’t rush—take a few minutes to chat. His warmth is infectious, and he’s full of stories, tips, and genuine enthusiasm. And honestly? Just talking to him is worth the stop.

Inside, the shop is full of treasures. You’ll find a huge collection of vintage American license plates, including some incredibly rare and old ones that are like little pieces of history. Then there are countless Route 66-themed items: from magnets to Christmas ornaments, funny signs, home décor, quirky gadgets, and collectibles that will make your inner road-tripper smile.

👉 Among the more unexpected and delightful finds? A polar bear blowing soap bubbles. Yes—really. It’s that kind of place: full of charm, surprises, and smiles waiting to happen.

And yes—this is an official Route 66 Passport stamp location. So even if you’re just collecting stamps and memories, this is a must.

Outside, everything is just as charming. Colorful murals, state shields, vintage signs—it’s the kind of place that invites you to pull out your camera before you even step in.

And if you pay attention to the street right in front of the shop, you’ll notice something delightful: painted directly on the pavement are the Route 66 shields leading forward, and just at the intersection, the markings split—one pointing toward the continuation of the Route, and one toward the Two-Cell Jail.

It’s a simple but brilliant touch that turns a crossroads into a photo opportunity, and captures that unique sense of place and storytelling that defines this stretch of road 🛣️.

But beyond the items, beyond the pretty displays and the perfect selfie corners, what really stays with you is the feeling: the joy, the care, the sense that someone has put their heart into every detail.

We were lucky enough to meet Tom in person, and we can’t thank him enough—for the warm welcome, for the stories he shared, for the travel tips… and even for the thoughtful postcard he gave us to remember the moment ❤️. It’s easy to see why so many reviews about this place are glowing. And after visiting, we completely understand why .

So if you're driving through Gardner, make sure to slow down. Park. Wander. Step inside. Whether you buy a magnet or just leave with a smile and a stamp, The Shop on Route 66 is a stop you’ll be glad you made.
