A timeless Route 66 icon with a warm heart and a green neon glow
You don’t need to spend the night at the Desert Hills Motel to feel its charm—sometimes, all it takes is a brief stop, a smile, and a surprise encounter to make a place unforgettable.
We didn’t stay overnight here, as our time in Tulsa was just a passing moment during our long journey westward on Route 66. But the Desert Hills Motel was high on our list of places we had to see. As we drove down historic 11th Street, there it was: the vintage green neon sign glowing proudly, and right in front, the iconic Chevrolet parked like a silent witness to decades of travelers who have passed through.
Even from the outside, it’s worth a stop. We pulled over just to take a few quick photos—the kind you know will end up in your trip album forever. One shot of the car, another of the sign, and then... something unexpected happened.
The owner of the motel noticed us taking pictures. Instead of just waving from afar, he walked right over, greeted us warmly, and began chatting as if we were old friends. He asked about our journey, told us about the motel’s history, and insisted on taking a photo of us right there—framed by the sign and the unmistakable mid-century architecture behind.
As a parting gift, he handed us a pen shaped like a cactus. A small gesture, maybe. But in that moment, it felt like a souvenir carved from the spirit of the Mother Road itself. That pen stayed with us for the rest of the trip—a tangible reminder of how Route 66 isn’t just a road. It’s a community.
And that’s the real magic of places like the Desert Hills Motel. Sure, the retro vibes, neon lights, and classic cars are all part of the visual appeal. But what makes them truly special are the people—those who care for these landmarks, who keep them alive not just with paint and signs, but with stories, smiles, and generosity.
We left Tulsa with only a few photos and a small gift in hand, but the feeling stayed much longer. That brief moment, that simple human connection, reminded us once again: kindness on Route 66 is never out of fashion.
Whether you’re staying the night or just passing through, don’t miss the Desert Hills Motel. Sometimes, all it takes is five minutes and an open heart to make a memory that lasts forever.
