✨ With a camera in his hands and Route 66 in his heart, Ian turns miles into memories — and at the End of the Trail, he reminds us that every ending is just another beginning.

When you think of Route 66, you think of neon lights, roadside diners, and desert horizons. But what truly stays with you are the people you meet along the way. On the Santa Monica Pier, just steps from the “End of the Trail” sign, we met Ian Bowen, and suddenly the ending of our journey felt like a beginning.

Ian is not just someone behind a counter at the 66 to Cali kiosk. He’s a traveler, a storyteller, and a photographer with a deep love for the Mother Road. As we chatted with him, he told us about his frequent trips along Route 66, sometimes at unusual hours, just to feel the pulse of the road and capture it with his camera. His pictures — some bursting with surreal colors at sunset, others stripped down to black-and-white essentials — are not just images, they are fragments of soul.

As we talked with him, Ian opened up about how his passion for the road began. Growing up between California, the Bay Area, and Colorado, he spent much of his youth camping and hiking in the mountains and deserts of the West. Those early adventures shaped his love of travel, but he also remembered the long interstate trips of his childhood — endless miles of featureless highways, chain motels, and drive-thrus. That contrast, he told us, is what drew him to the old roads like Route 66, where you can still find diners that serve with care, neon that glows in the night, and people who take the time to talk. Later, after studying industrial design, he discovered visual storytelling, and photography became his way of capturing those moments and preserving the character of the road.

During the days we spent in Santa Monica, we went back to see him more than once. Every time, we shared laughs, swapped stories, and looked through photos — ours from the trip we had just finished, his from the countless miles he keeps traveling. There was something inspiring in his energy: the way he lives the road not as a relic of the past, but as something alive, breathing, full of encounters and discoveries.

What struck us most was not just his talent, but the way he shares it — with warmth, curiosity, and a genuine love for the Mother Road. Listening to him, looking at his photos, we felt once again that Route 66 is alive in the people who keep telling its story.

Meeting Ian reminded us that Route 66 isn’t only about reaching a destination. It’s about connections. It’s about standing on the edge of the pier, with the ocean stretching wide before you, and realizing that there are always more journeys to take, more stories to tell, and more people to meet.

So when you stop at 66 to Cali, don’t just pick up your certificate or passport. Take a moment to talk to Ian. Look at his photos, listen to his stories. You may find that, like us, you’ll leave not only with a souvenir, but with a memory etched in your heart.
