From Tulsa: stories, kindness, and two unforgettable smiles — our day with Pauletta & Dan 2 lovely members of the Village Crew.

Sometimes, the most memorable Route 66 experiences aren’t the grandest sights but the people you meet along the way. Our stop at the Route 66 Historical Village in Tulsa is one of those moments that will stay with us forever.

We pulled in on a blazing hot day, thinking it would just be a quick visit. The sun was merciless, the air heavy, and honestly, all we wanted was a bit of shade. And yet, despite the heat, we ended up staying longer than expected—because of two extraordinary volunteers at the little Phillips 66 gas station: Pauletta Clawson and Dan Presley.

With genuine warmth and passion, they welcomed us as if we were part of their story. They posed for photos with us, joined us in a few selfies, and shared memories that brought this place to life: the days when flames still flickered inside the old pumps, when travelers on the Mother Road stopped here not just for fuel but for a quick bite and a moment of rest. They even spoke of a young local girl who once lived nearby, long before fame carried her voice far beyond Tulsa.

Stepping inside the small visitor center felt like opening a time capsule. Old photographs, tiny artifacts, and Route 66 souvenirs covered the walls—each piece a fragment of history that somehow made us feel like we belonged to this great story too.

We didn’t manage to explore the full grounds that day (the heat was just too much to walk around the massive train outside), but honestly, it didn’t matter. What we took with us was far more precious than photos of a locomotive or an oil derrick—it was the kindness, stories, and passion of those who keep Route 66 alive for future generations.

So here’s our advice: even if you only have a few minutes, stop here. Take a photo, walk around, and most importantly—talk to the volunteers. They are the beating heart of this place, and their dedication will make you feel more connected to the Mother Road than any sign or artifact ever could.

We left that day hot, tired, but smiling—and even now, we remember Pauletta and Dan with deep affection ❤️.
