 on the Route 66

During my journey along the legendary Route 66, one stop that really caught me was the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. This unique roadside attraction is more than just a collection of half-buried vintage Cadillacs: to me, it's like an ever-evolving canvas of creativity, rebellion and history. If you're planning a Route 66 adventure, this is one destination you absolutely cannot miss.

Cadillac Ranch: A creative oasis in the desert

The Cadillac Ranch is not just a stop along the way: it is an open-air museum of personal expression. Nestled in the vast plains of Texas, I find this installation perfectly blends contemporary art with American car culture.

Walking among the ten Cadillacs that emerged from the earth, covered in layers of colourful graffiti, I felt a fascinating contrast between nostalgia and modern artistic freedom. I stayed more than one night in Amarillo, so I was able to visit the Cadillad Ranch on more than one occasion, and each visit here was different from the one before.

The cars are constantly being repainted by visitors (literally every day), turning the Cadillac Ranch into a living, breathing work of art.

What I found particularly captivating was the ever-changing nature of Cadillac Ranch. The art here is never static—each visit greeted me with new layers of paint, fresh interpretations, and a subtly altered mood that mirrored the passage of time.

Unlike traditional museums, where the exhibits remain unchanged, this place evolves daily: every message, signature or spray-painted drawing contributes to an ever-growing story.

Discovering the myth: the history of the Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac Ranch was created in 1974 by the art collective Ant Farm as a statement on consumerism and the golden age of American automobiles. The ten Cadillacs, buried with their snouts upturned, represent the evolution of the iconic tail design from 1949 to 1963. The installation is both a tribute to automotive innovation and a critique of the ephemeral nature of material culture.

My personal tips for visiting Cadillac Ranch

If you plan to stop at Cadillac Ranch, here are some tips to make the most of your visit:

  • Go early or late: The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon, when the Texas sun casts dramatic shadows and the colours of the graffiti stand out even more.
  • Bring your spray paint: I highly recommend you bring your own spray paint 🎨, because the mobile van that sells them isn’t always open. In fact, when I visited, I was lucky to have brought mine since the van shop was closed. Just remember that whatever you create today will probably be covered by someone else tomorrow 😅.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: The installation is located in an open field, so be prepared for a short walk on unpaved ground.
  • Don't go if it is raining or has recently rained: the area where Cadilac Ranch is located is dirt, so if it is raining or has recently rained it is muddy and definitely difficult to get to.
  • Capture the moment: The contrast between the bright, colourful cars and the vast Texas landscape makes for incredible photos. Don't forget your camera or phone!
  • Respect the space: Cadillac Ranch thrives on its visitors. Leave the art behind, not the trash, and help keep this landmark alive for future travellers.
